My advice is to bring it to a pro. Replace the power cord and and add a fuse to run the legacy system. These things are complicated and afire hazard if done right. It is worth the money. Cheap insurance. One Fire Fighter to another.
thanks for the info....problem solved....bad common on AU side.....
Open it up and look at the binding posts and the bus bar that the 'U' terminals are connected to. The A,B,C,D binding posts are known to break internally after many years and lose contact with the wires, and the 'U' binding posts break loose from the bus bar.

Just replaced several of these on a ZW I picked up last week. Originally only one was missing; when I opened it up to replace the one post (I used an 022 switch post replacement, a bit smaller than the ZW's posts) plus the power cord, the wires to C and D popped off. So I ordered a set of 4 replacements, and as I was replacing those two, two of the commons popped out [sigh]. Moral of the story is to order extras, the originals are very fragile.
Also, it's pretty tight in the box - if you remove the bottom screws you can move the rectifier out of the way, but if you have a 5/16 wrench available it's much easier to tighten the nuts than with pliers.
I've resuscitated ZWs in the past by running appropriate sized screws through the hole whence the commons popped out, securing them with a nut tightened against the outside of the case.
"Like a charm, it woiks!"
And, yeah, I know, I gotta clean up the rat's nest one of these decades... ;-)
