I'm personally hoping to see a Charger in the ALC-42 configuration from 3rd Rail.  It has several variations from the currently operating SC-44s for long distance service.  The first are supposed to enter service this year.  I'd be interested in another P42 in the wave scheme, but for the most part the P42 is past its service life.

Bachmann will likely offer the new schemes on their Genesis locomotives.

If Lionel was smart they’d create new tooling and make a run of Legacy Chargers. Given the various railroads that already have Chargers and future railroad purchases they would have a good variety of paint schemes. I’d imagine they could get 2-3 good runs. That is if new tooling and licensing is something they are willing to invest in.

I believe there is a great need for modern Amtrak locomotives. While it would be great for Lionel or 3rd Rail to build a highly detailed P42 or SC44, MTH is the only manufacturer remotely prepared to offer modem Amtrak power in those new paints.

At this point, any new Amtrak would be welcome.

edit...

After walking my dog and thinking about this post, I want to clarify. MTH has the only know mold of a fairly scale P42 that can be produced quickly in those new paint schemes.

Well, Amtrak is getting set to retire the P42s fairly soon. I would find it difficult to think that Lionel or 3rd Rail would invest so much into a tooling they may only really be able to use once.

Why is that? How many E units are in active service? Or steam locomotives?  They still seem to pump out plenty of newly tooled versions of those.

E units and steam locomotives are a lot more popular, and Lionel can get much more use out of their toolings than an Amtrak-only* specific model. The P42s have been in service for over 20 years, if Lionel really wanted to make one, I feel they would have made it by now. I might be wrong and I hope they prove me wrong. I could personally see 3rd Rail producing it because they will make these Amtrak-specific engines (E60) and do it with smaller production numbers.

*I know CT Rail, VIA, and Metro North uses P42-like locomotives

If the secondhand market is anything to go by, it still seems that there is a significant demand for the phase V genesis still as there has only been one listed and sold on the bay in the last 3 months. I am looking to build a Southwest Chief set, but finding MTH wave genesis locomotives is nearly impossible! So, I'd definitely like to see MTH do a run of the regular phase v along with these new 50th anniversary locomotives.

Im going with RJ on this one. MTH has the tooling. If you think anyone is going to invest that much money in tooling right now your sadly mistaken. If they did you would be paying $700 for a diesel. Somebody mentioned MTH doesn't have tooling for a Dash 8. Sorry yes they do. As far old tooling it can be upgraded fairly simple.  Since RJ brings up a good point Amtrak is phasing out these locomotives MTH would be the more sensible manufacturer to bang them out. Anyone remember the Six Million Dollar Man entrance? "We have the technology we can rebuild him"? MTH has the tooling they can rebuild him also.

As far as the history video about the paint scheme's, I found it very interesting and worth watching again..

I’d have to wait to see what they look like in person before purchasing anything from Lionel, but won’t preorder. Shame on me and all that.

@RJ I, I was just perusing the JR Junction website and they have both the 20-64016 & 20-64017 Amfleet sets in stock...  Here's a screen shot.

This is where I got mine from!

Thanks!

Have my preorder in for three 3rd Rail units.  One in Phase V, one in Phase V 50th Anniversary, and one in Phase III 50th Anniversary to pull my Amfleet / Viewliner cars as well as the future Superliner sets.

I did the same for the Atlas Premier Dash 8 "Pepsi Can" Genesis and both Phase III F40PHs from @JR Junction Train & Hobby, in 2-rail to get the newly tooled fixed pilots!

YAY!
