hi again George i talked to mth yesterday about my z40-4000 transformer that i had talked to you about before . he suggested checking the potentiometer Originally Posted by GGG:s, he said they both have to be timed so they are both shut of at the time. I had already knew that, and it was not the problem, he said on power up the transformer checks to see that both controls are off or the red overload light will come on.That's not the problem, when you reset the processor board and make sure all connectors are on and plugged in tight sometimes it will come on and work, It will only work for a few minutes and then the same symptom happens again red light and locked up, will not work again until sits a while and board processor is reseated again!do you have any idea,s George? im wondering if there is a leaky capacitor braking down under voltage or possible has lost a lot of its uf hence it lets ac noise ripple into the electronic and causes a lockup of the transformer processor due to noise on the dc line! anyone, have any ideas, he said the board "processor brd is around $100.00 but i wanted the challenge of fixing the transformer myself.I use to repair anything in electronics when i worked for PSEG before i retired. even repaired XRAY machine and explosive bomb detectors.
would appreciate any help. sincerely thanks to all you great guys!

Alan

hi all I've got the MTH 40-4000 transformer fixed , been running almost 1/2 hour by now, there not very easy to work on bud i made do. works great in all options and resting capability. If i can help anyone sometime just ask.
Great sense of feelinging when you fix something electronic by yourself ,just have to rely on your electronic theory and it all works out!good luck to anyone in there endevers on all repair and keep patients, you have to keep a clear head while trouble shooting! It's worth the reward!

I tested each FET on the power supply board, and suspected A FET problem, so
i took everyone out of the power supply board and Gated then on and off,
some looked iffy at best but after checking them since I'm waiting for the
FET's to come in the mail I soldered them back in there same sockets and
it ran for almost 2.5 to three hours and then suddenly locked up again show
20 vac on the display , when in fact there was no voltage at all, I think
part of the problems were COLD solder joints on the FET's
.. when the FET's come in the mail I'll probably change all of the FET's. !
Before i removed them ,I could only get the transformer to run for less
then 5 minutes, and then lock up with the short light lit, now I got almost 3
hours before the transformed locked up and the display was still showing 20
VDC when in fact there was no dc voltage at all!
