hi George John N Marty mth 20-3044-1 repair

There is a 12 pin socket, an 8 pin socket, and a 4 pin socket all clustered in one spot on both the 5V and 3V boards.  There is a 7 pin socket and a 2 pin socket on the 3V power supply, same for the 5V board.  Finally, at the other end of the board there is a 5 pin socket for the motor(s).

i agree with what your saying but did you take a good look at the harness from the motor and tach all of these wires go threw one connector part of that harness connect to the 10 pin connector between the tender and locomotive !Alan

where does that connector plug in there is no socket anywhere with the number of pins it has on it! Alan

It plugs into the header that is on the same PCB the 10 pin tender harness plugs into.  It faces forward.  You can see it on the first picture.  That is the connection that allows the frame to disconnect from the shell.  G

thanks George just figured it out just before you typed in your answer, should i be able to download the steam file for this engine it does come up under the 20-3044-1 on mth web sight with proto 2 sound?

Yes, use the upgrade engine file.  This is one of the engines the 5V did not seem to last on.  I have upgraded about 7 or so.  Some with almost no miles on them.  The upgrade file is the converted 5V and no one has complained about it.  G

hi geogre or john can't get sound file to up or download computer say can't find TIU I've ckecked all connections many time unless my new serial to usb port cable something is wrong with it>
"Im confused because I've never a computer cable com with a install disk??Any Idea's  it keeps juming from port to port and evently gives a no tiu error!

That disc most likely has the driver software for the cable. Did you install the driver software?

yes i loaded the disk but it still did not work?

i did though find a driver to load from mth web sight and then it seem to comunicate with tiu but sound files don't load, i even tried to download from a working engine and it would try to download  and then abort and ask again if i wanted to try again! do you know if a bad soundfile or the wrong sound file in a 3 volt board would cause the bell and whistle sounds too squeal real loud. also the engine will run on dcs but to sounds from chuff or anything,I think either the board is bad or the sound file is wrong or corrupted! any ideas,Thanks for any help you can give Barry!

The bell and whistle having a single tone and no other sounds is the state a new upgrade boards comes in.  That's the test software in the board before any sound file is loaded.  There's nothing wrong with the board if the locomotive moves, lights work, and smoke turns on/off.

You first need to sort out the Computer <-> TIU communication before trying to load sound files.

In Windows Device Manger, please post a screen shot of what is under the Ports (COM & LPT) category, here's an example of mine.
