Thanks Charlie  That was great.   The Pittsburgh and Shawmut SW9's that I model were new 1953 and 1954.  My guess is that they were rebuilt at least (4) times until the Shawmut became Buffalo and Pittsburgh.  I was thinking that some of the SW stuff dated to the 30's  There was an SW7 before the SW9's  The Montour RR, that I also model, had SW7's

Not quite true. There never was a parts supply shortage from many, many, many suppliers other than EMD for the 16-567 engine. Also, many large railroads chose to trade their GP7/9 units into EMD for GP40-2 and GP50/60 units.

 

There is still no shortage of new, remanufactured, "running take out", or unit exchange engine components available for the EMD 12 and 16 cylinder 567 and/or 645 engines.
