Just got the bad news from Sunset 3rd....no horn on the AC9; whistle only. This is a real disaster, and now I need to figure out how to put a horn in her , on top of the other stuff already there. Lionel had both devises in their scale die cast AC9 from a decade ago. Mine is now long gone. Even if Lionel would sell you the sound bloc, which I seriously doubt...how would you get it to work? This lokkie has to have a horn ! That same question will be asked on the two rail forum, with regards to the Sunset 2 rail version of this machine. Ideas??? Thanks !

First, have you contacted Scott Mann directly?
Second, since Sunset/3rd Rail uses ERR for the TMCC, sounds, and command control, you might try contacting them.
Third, Lionel does now offer RS4 and RS5 "sound chips" if you can figure out exactly which "chip" you want.

really? I need one. Where do you find them?
That's good news about Lionel and the sound chips, because that will allow me to replace the old generic QSI sound in my PRR J1 Sunset 3rd. The Lionel sound from the first J1 offering in 2001 was incredible...far superior to the current version. As for the AC9 ...I got an e-mail from Sunset yesterday saying whistle only. Now the hunt begins. The availability of horn will be a big factor in whether to go two or three rail on this project.
Order a TMCC conversion kit and sound commander from ERR and when Lionel parts is back up and running order 691-RS4E-01A, AC-9 sound card. It has both SP whistle and horn. Lionel lists it available at an incredibly low price of 40.00.
IF it already has TMCC, then a simple 'plug and play' swap of the sound cards and you have the correct whistle. I think Scott is limited to the generic articulated sound.

That must be why my Sunset/3rd Rail Southern Pacific black GS-4 came with a horn and a whistle (TMCC from ERR), while the new SP AC-9 has only a whistle (it being an articulated and probably has that N&W 'Hooter' whistle anyway).
I wouldn't trade my Lionel AC-9 for any other version, by anybody. Model steam locomotives just get no classier.
If L ever does the later oil version (and it's correct), I'm in big trouble.
Love the horn - love the horn on my Lionel NYC Niagara, too.
