Do you want to be on the tracks or are you looking for a fairly nice hotel? For the former, the Tunnel Inn in Gallitzin and for the latter, I've stayed in the Clarion on Pleasant Valley Road a couple of times.
I really like the Tunnel Inn, are they still in operation?

If you're OK with a non-RR atmosphere, the Hampton Inn is nice there, and the room-rate includes a hot buffet breakfast. I've stayed there, and it's close enough to the RR sites if you're gonna do some sightseeing for the weekend.
I like the Travelodge in Bedford. Reasonable, just off Turnpike/I-99, great hot breakfast, and only an easy 30 minutes from the good stuff.
A new Wingate by Wyndham just opened up in dowtown Altoona. It's a nice hotel and the rates are good right now. You can walk to the Amtrak station from the hotel.
John,
I believe there is a train show next Sunday at the Convention Center in Altoona.
Thank you everyone, Jim can't make it next week. That would be great. the Wyndham sounds good, the wife is not much on walking, she just had her hip replaced.
Altoona, home of the Boyer "Mallo Cup," it is my favorite, but do enjoy your stay among the hills of Pennsylvania.

From the new hotel you can walk to Neely's Train Shop. A great way to spend some free time.

Where my Mom used to work. Altoona is my hometown. Visit the 'Curve' while there.

Then I can certainly understand her not wanting to walk that much. It's still a 2 minute drive to the Amtrak station or railroad museum from that hotel. It's also a one-minute drive to the Norfolk Southern plant! It's less than a block away from Neely's Train Shop as mentioned above.

Sure is! And I will be there!
