Good Day Gentlemen,

This evening I was thinking back on the AtlasO post I created to campaign for the GP40-2 titled How about EMD GP40-2’s for future production?” I created that post on May 23, 2008. There were 30,659 people read/view the posts with 229 replies.  Is there still an interest in the GP40-2 being produced?  Who will be the first to produce this diesel locomotive in O Scale?

Regards,

Swafford

Perhaps O scale will see its own GP40-2 sooner or later.

Frank guess what road I want this engine made in?

Is there still interest in the GP40-2 being presented in O Scale?

Hello, Frank.

Yes, I believe there is strong interest in an O scale GP40-2. It was such a common locomotive and was operated by many roads in all areas of the country so most fans would have encountered them trackside at one time or another. I still remember when we received our new GP40-2s on Conrail. The new units were very welcome at the time.

It's too bad Athearn doesn't offer O scale motive power and, unfortunately, it'll never happen. I'm not sure the O scale/gauge market as presently constituted can support the manufacturers we have now. Perhaps once Atlas works past its issues, the GP40-2 would be a good starting point for re-establishing a solid presence in this scale. The company already offers the GP40-2 in HO and N scales so its choice would seem logical.

Regards,

Bob

The SD40-2 in the new Lionel catalog are nice, but...

Maybe one could be bashed into a GP40-2. New trucks (from the GP35?) and shortening, and...

Then again, there is only one guy around here who would try something crazy like that.

Yeah that IS crazy.. esp when an article in a O scale 48/ft issue #173 & #174 mag did step by step construction of one from a Weaver GP38!

I agree. Count me in for a Chessie or Union Pacific GP-40.

Love the Lionel GP-30 and GP35. I run them as MU.

But don't hold yer breath. Remember milk cars?  Before they'll consider your idea, its in Lionels DNA to run things over and over ad nauseum till they're blown out.

MTH did a run of GP60's a few year back in different roads.

Its a slightly bigger engine and one to consider if your looking for an alternative to the tsunami of GP-35's that recently hit the market.

Good Day Gentlemen,

As mentioned above, on the Atlas O forum, I created to campaign for the GP40-2 titled How about EMD GP40-2’s for future production?” I created that post on May 23, 2008.

To date there have been 35818 people read/view the posts with 229 replies. 5000 more views since July 2012!

Is there still an interest in the GP40-2 being produced? I would say, yes. Who will be the first to produce this diesel locomotive in O Scale?

Correct but that run was filled with faux Paint schemes- esp for the GP60M!

Technically the NYC unit above is a straight GP40. You can tell by the GP38 early radiator grills and lack of sight glass on the engineers side of the long hood to designate the dash 2 line. MTH has made this model but yet to paint it in nyc colors. so far I have the Conrail one.

MTH did do them in the older New York Central scheme back in 2002.  The item numbers were 20-2371-1 and 20-2371-3.

I AGREE TOTALLY!!!!Now the question is how do we modelers get it done?I think shelf couplers would be great too, along with new paint/letter schemes for the 4750 cu ft cvd hoppers,as well as the 5161,but getting it done by manufactuers are 2 worlds apart,as I've tried. The answer is,"Ba Humbug"! We're interested where the bucks are!! That's the answer I've gotten from main manufacturers. That's why I think I'm headed back to HO. There's just no future especially for the modern modeler,in O Scale.Al Hummel

Along this line, before I exit O Scale,I want to put this question out for opinions.Does $285 for the 1st initial car seem about right to have a custom decorated 4750 cvd Atlas hopper paited & lettered ? This includes decals made from scratch by a company, which is $50, 1 time for the initial design, then $185 for paint/lettering,plus $50 for the undecorated hopper.I'm looking to have SCL/L&N Family Lines 4750 cu ft cvd hoppers produced for my 2 rail potential layout, but for 1 car that's salty, probably inline, just salty.Thank you,Al Hummel

I agree am chomping at the bit for 2 minimum. I want mine CSX,but think that's a sure thing.

Atlas needs to do something to convert their 3 rail models over for 2 rail use to make modelers happy & to improve their sales. MTH has done it why not Atlas & Lionel? This would help the O scale market to expand at least among O scalers. I'd have 2 GP15s in CSX by now if I could convert the 3 rail over to 2rail.
