kennyb, I feel your pain and couldn't reply in depth yesterday because I was converting my kitchen lighting from fluorescent to LED Track lighting and had to get the lights back on.

 

In 2011 I built a replacement control box for a toy train museum's operating layout.  Here is The Circuit Wiring Diagram for that controller.

The control box converts the AC power to DC and activates the accessory's sequence.  I did not find the socket parts to go with your plugs.

This is a very helpful wiring diagram - thank you so much for posting it! One improvement to Lionel's design would be to eliminate the four diodes and replace it with a standard full wave bridge rectifier. Doing this would eliminate the need to worry about diode polarity, while being able to feed the black and red buses with only one wire each (instead of two). I'm not sure why Lionel opted to use diodes instead of the rectifier, but I suspect component cost had a role.
