I need to find out if one of my engines is a proto2 or 3. Is there a way to check whether an MTH engine is a proto 2 or 3? Can you tell with the remote?

Well ? if there's a battery charging port it is PS2.
You could use the MTH loader and see how much memory it has. 4meg or larger would be PS3.
Does it have LED head lights?
What is it exactly?
Do you know much about it? You could use all the info you have including the cab # and road name to search the MTH site.
There is a very small sticker on the bottom that says ps3. Duh.
Nope. No duh. There have been times when it's not obvious to me.
When I took off my contact lenses I could see it. So much for that. Thanks Joe.
How do you identify a proto 2 ( 3 volt) system when buying one say like off the bay. I have seen the manual say it one the front cover. Mine infact say it there. The box end doesnt always say 3 volt system. With out asking the seller is there a way to tell?
The earlier 5 volt has either a round charging port, or no charging port. The battery is shaped like a rectangle (9volt). The 3 volt is usually 2 AAs. The Five volt was back in 2000 to maybe 2002? I think it lingered in some later releases in certain models to 2003?
the easiest way is to look up the item number on the MTH web sight and then you are sure!

Found a very small sticker that said ps3.
Jim,
The great thing about the P3 engines is that they have the built in BCR, great stuff no doubt about it.
