I model a greater Pittsburgh location and decades-wide time range so my "one" PRR railroad can include rolling stock from the B&O, the P&LE, Southern, etc. -- right up to Norfolk Southern.  (If I'm tempted to stray from this already flexible plan, for say, D&H, Boston & Maine and friends, a colorful western or Canadian road, I consider N scale.  If I do break down and stray, this two-gauge strategy keeps the rolling stock clutter manageable and the O gauge motive power and rolling stock focused.)

Tomlinson Run Railroad

Since I have yet to see a train I wouldn't enjoy running, I try to keep it to one road to keep things under control. I worked for the LIRR with my dad, and some other family members so that is what I stick with. Of course, I can't be limited to one era, and since it was owned by the Pennsy, I can justify buying some Pennsylvania trains here and there. Then there are some that I like so much I break my 'rules.' Oh, and I'm a bit of a 'rubber scaler' also - see the HO on the top shelf.

My understanding (NOT necessarily correct) is that a "rubber-scaler" is a hobbyist who has piddled in various scales, looking for Nirvana, the Holy Grail of scales, but found only in 1:1.

Does it have to be about looking for Nirvana, or could it be that they just like trains no matter what scale? Someday I plan to build a layout with O, O27 and Standard gauge, and I will also have G gauge running in the room, but not part of the layout. I had HO when I was a kid, but I only kept one car, a bicentennial caboose.

My favorite RR is the old WAG Railroad, located in the Pa mountains, however I have plenty of other RR names also, including the original UP City of San Fran Passenger Train, and that is about as far across the county as RR names get from each other.  further I have a real nice PRR GG1 Military Train with fantastic military rolling stock.DSCN1752

Being an East Coast guy (username gives away the railroad I used to see), I wanted to model "outside" my comfort zone.  I have always loved railroading out west, the scenery, elements and the classic road names. My first love has always been the Rio Grande, with the Action Road livery.  The speed lettering, the stripes on the front back and the history of moving freight thru some of the harshest elevations in the country.  So my switching layout is a tribute to the history of this railroad.  I also have several UP and one Sante Fe GP.  I try to stick with railroads I know were near or on Rio rails.

PRR ca 1952 (whilst PRR was still painting passenger electrics & diesels in G^d's own DGLE). Keeps expenditures down...Extend my timeframe back to 1948 so as to use the T-1 without being called out by the anachronism police.

That said, favorite examples from other Eastern steam, e.g. Reading, B&O, C&O, N&W for variety & spice. Rolling stock from mostly RR's operating east of Chicago.

I have an SP Baldwin diesel and a brass T&NO caboose to go with it.  Except for those all locomotives (4 steam, 4 diesel switchers, 10 road switchers, 7 cabs, 6 boosters) and all waycars are from my home road.  Even my right of way signs are from my home road.  And the home road emblem is displayed in two places on the faux double-sheathed boxcar siding that serves as the layout's skirt.

Of course I have freight cars from other roads.  I even have some head-end cars from other roads, but, in both cases, only from other railroads that interchanged such equipment with my home road, and they are only used in my secondary passenger trains such as Nos. 57 and 58, 93 and 94, 3 and 4, 23 and 24, and 123 and 124.

Loyal and dedicated?  Without any doubt!

Ever since I was little, I've lived next to the Southern Rwy. (Forrest) Yard in Memphis (currently renamed after someone less... controversial). I loved trains so much that my parents bought me a Lionel (Jersey Central Lines) set at 6. (The box said '8 and up'). Sadly, I was disappointed that not one of the cars were Southern. I recognized some of the railroads (CN, Burlington Route in post-merger colors, Union Pacific), but I wanted Southern rolling stock in the worst way. As a result, nearly all of the cars I added to my train set in the '80s were Southern... sort of. I say 'sort of' because unlike cars from other railroads (Conrail, NYC, Union Pacific), my FARR tank car and red 9700 boxcar didn't meet the level detail I was used to seeing across the street from my bedroom window. (It wasn't until the late '90s that I saw the brown -- 'Tuscan red' -- "9711" 9700 series boxcar, and even then I wondered why they didn't paint the inside of the 'O' green.)
When I first learned how to use the Internet, my first e-mail was to Lionel, asking them to make a new Southern boxcar in the 6464 series. I gave them every detail I could and tried to give them every detail I could. (Since Southern cars still run on this now-NS line, I didn't have to memorize them, I still saw them everyday.) After my meaty letter, they ended up producing what I'd asked for and showing it off in their 1998 catalog.

Even though my tastes have expanded, I still prefer to have as much Southern Railway and Norfolk Southern as possible. (If someone produces some pre-merger era Mo-Pac or ICG stock, I might find room for it too.) I also have an interest in 1970s-1990s Trailer-Train (and "TTX") rolling stock, but it's hard to find design-accurate pieces in O-42 radius cars.

I only have Southern locomotives.  It helps me control my spending.

I wish I had more Southern locomotives. I eventually spent half a week's pay to get my one black Southern FM Trainmaster, with accurate fonts on the side. Since I grew up in the 80s, all of the Southern diesels I saw were black, except for two green ones pushing behind the 4501 Mikado.

Model: I only have eyes for the East Tennessee & Western North Carolina Railroad as on a narrow gauge layout, you can't interchange with anything.

Real life: I have a thing for many RRs. Always been a fan of the Southern Pacific, been a Milwaukee Road fan ever since I had a house built within sight of the abandoned right of way for the Pacific Extension, most of the southern area RRs as I grew up there, even have a soft spot for Dutch and German RRs, too. I also have been on a lifelong quest to visit every existing narrow gauge non-park railroad in this country, and I only have 3 left to go (got the difficult ones in the far north, Hawaii and Alaska done already)...

Anything that's premium quality, on a deep discounted sale, no tax and possibly free shipping!

I am partial to NYC Central, Erie and NS, pretty much due to the color schemes and design.

The only one I don't like is Santa Fe, as that's all I could afford around when I was 10 years old from Kay-b-toys. I remember walking to the local Lionel store in amazement, but couldn't afford to buy anything, but still enjoyed it. Still can't afford a lot that I get today, but I try...

I'm currently loyal to Burlington Northern, simply because that green looks awesome.  But after my wife bought me my first locomotive which was the Lionel SD60e Veterans edition, I'm thinking about switching to Norfolk Southern.  I've watched some videos on how much time and effort they went through to build and paint that machine.  They also go out of their way to hire vets.

As I vet myself, I'm very appreciative of their efforts and may start collection their rolling stock  to show my support for them.

I run any railroad line that has connected to or through Chicago and Lionel Lines. I have a C&O engine and New York Central and Santa Fe. What do you know? They all connected to Chicago. Is there a railroad that hasn't connected to Chicago, even through a merger? If so, I may need to give trackage rights. It's my railroad.

In today's world, the only one of the big seven not going into Chicago is KCS.

I like the Kansas City Southern colors, so someday I may need to grant them trackage rights or 'lease' one of their engines.

Or have it on a run through train.

ATSF was a road I respected, but never really liked or get myself into.  Really do not know why.  Guess i grew up around the Friendly SP.
