If you took the time to take it apart, replacing the brushes would seem prudent. If it has an E-unit, that may need some maintenance too.
Sounds like you have it for the motor.
it does not have an e_unit it has a manual reverse switch. it is an american flyer 0 gage. i also have to find out what kind of brushes it takes. they kinda looked like the old milk cans lol.
if one spring was depressed more then the other one so one brush was not on the commuter like the other one would that give a problem like a hesitant motor??
Reconditioning is a step-by-step process. After cleaning and lubrication, a locomotive may not run smoothly. Check the brushes, brush springs, gears and the drive train. See if everything turns smoothly by hand. Maybe something got caught in the gears or wrapped around an axle. Axle bearings may be worn, too. That will put the gears and axles out of alignment.
Sometimes the hole in the brushplate is worn too large. Check the other end of the armature shaft, too.
Old locomotives can be cantankerous. Tackle one potential problem at a time.
Rods on a steam locomotives can wear or move out of alignment and cause binding, too.
thanks reading fan i will start doing that
