How do determine if an original QSI locomotive has been upgraded to Proto-2? Is there some markings on the board in the tender to inspect? Is there a menu item in advanced on the MTH controller?

The pictures you show are of a MTH PS2or PS3 with a 3v board system. The original Protosounds (PS-1) or QSI sounds will have a QSI sticker on the components and if it has a battery, will be a 9v.

Yes, looks like a PS2 3 volt board set there.
Blue AA battery set is an easy clue.
This will run in either conventional (Transformer voltage control) or in command mode (16-18v constant to track). If you have the DCS TIU and remote or WiFi system, you should be able to add it to the system and run. QSI is always conventional, and not seen by command systems.

If the tech did not put a speaker on, the easiest way from an external inspection is look at tether for steam. 10 pin is PS-2, 4 pin is PS-1. If diesel, look at couplers. The "patent" on coupler is PS-2 or 3 and PS-1 couplers look different. Otherwise it is obvious when you open the shell. G
