My recently upgraded RK 2-8-0 is begging for some more lights.  I have a brass headlight/taillight housing I want to put on the tender (I think that comes on automatically when you put the engine in reverse).  I was even thinking about putting the marker lights on the tender, like what's on my RK Imperial 0-6-0.

The file I'm currently using apparently doesn't have the marker light turn on/off feature (not in the list as I scroll down), so I need to find a file that does have the marker lights.

Here's about the only one I could find:

That's a RK PRR engine 30-1159-1.

But unless I load the engine with the file, I don't see any way to know if it has the marker lights BEFORE I do the download.

I didn't have much luck with any of the premier files I downloaded, all of them gave un-synched chuffs, that's why I ended up using a RK file.

John,

The final file I used was a regular PS2 sound file, not an upgrade file.  I couldn't find one that synched up the wheel rotation to the chuffs, to my liking anyway.  I only tried 4-5 files so there may be one that does the trick.

I noticed you asked more or less the same question on one of my old posts:

Barry's reply was that to get things like marker light function the file has to come from an engine that originally came with lights (at least I think that's what he meant).

Also, if an engine that comes up doesn't have the 5 volt or 3 volt icon showing, can I use the file?  How do I know if it's 3 volt or not?

If you click on "SERVICE" then "PRODUCT FILES AND DOCUMENTS" then type in 2-8-0, there's a number of engines that come up that don't have the 3 or 5 volt icon.

The one I first mentioned above (30-1159-1) shows both a sound file and an upgrade sound file icon, but no 3 or 5 volt icon:

Engine 30-1159-1 is the 2nd one down the list.

STOP!!!

When I clicked on the upgrade file to save it, the file name indicates it's a 3 volt file.  The original PS2 file name only says "final MTH" file, no volt indication is given.  So just because there's no 3 volt icon doesn't mean there's not a file that will work (Did you or Barry say at one point that ALL upgrade files are 3 volt?).

Is the only way to find out if the marker lights are on this 3 volt upgrade volt, is if you download it and try it out, or will the engine writeup ALWAYS indicate operating marker lights?

I did notice marker lights mentioned in the writeups of Premier engines, I'll most likely try another one of them, but I hate to have to do a bunch of downloading trying to find one that has in-sync chuffs and all the other lights (markers) and sounds (generator spooling) I want.

Barry,  The marker lights are the LEDs and not connected to the Ditch light function.

John, Yes all upgrade kits are 3V boards.

Bob, the steam upgrade kits included the LED marker lights for a tender.  They include the 8 pin connector, so most upgrade files should have the markers turned on.  I would also think many others would too since they can't be used for other functions.

Either way just try it.  Plug in the marker harness to your tender and see if they light up.  The reverse light will be available also.

The way I see if a file may have what I need is by reading the description of the engine from MTH web. It is not a perfect method, but it does help.  Otherwise you have to load it and test it.  Usually new programs have more functions available.

The same applies to determing the sound file, used the web but remembert the name convention of the file sometimes help.  In the end the loader won't let you load a a 5V file into a 3V board and vice versa.  So no harm.  Happy Thanksgiving, G
