Cab chatter is highly subject to the importer's tastes, and ours! Lionel has been guilty of some of the best out there (c. 2001) and some of the worst ! (more recent)
I say..if you're going to supply it.....do it right, and not a bunch of three year old jibbberish ! ! ! MTH chatter is consistently OK, but not awesome.
I'd select the ERR, if for no other reason, when and if you ever upgrade to command, you already have a compatible sound system.
Legacy sounds made me sell most of my MTH And other mfgs. Engines. I now don't own any other mfgs steam engines.
That' show much I like legacy sound and operation.
Not at all really. The diesel growl is interesting as is the steam chuff but I do not miss it if I run a loco with no sound.
Legacy sound, both dioesel and steam, is really way ahead of MTH - even Premier (not sure there is a difference, but anyway . . .). MTh is okay if the loco is otherwise good, however. I do love premium sound, but I also value the model quality, and lately MTh is nailing that.
I usually disable the sound on my locomotives, especially when I am running multiple units at one time. Too many locomotives in a small space sound like a muddled mess.
Very important; I would not have bought any with out sound and smoke.
Sound is important to me, especially steam sound. Apart from tinplate, which is another ball game entirely, I hardly ever buy a locomotive without sound, and I prefer to get the latest and best in sound systems.
However, sound quality is not the most important factor for me in a purchase decision. The main thing is: "Is it a high quality, accurate model of something I want?" I've seen a lot of posts by guys saying that now that they've heard Legacy, that's the only thing they will buy - no MTH, 3rd Rail, or whatever - it's gotta have Legacy sound. Now, I have a few Legacy engines and I agree that it's the best sound quality on the market (not always the most prototypical, but that's a different issue). However, I think that a lot of the "I won't buy anything else" posts are just variations on "my blood runs blue and orange" and people are looking for a justification to say that Lionel is the best of everything. Personally, I am not going to deny myself the pleasure of owning an Orient Express just because Lionel's sound is a little bit better than PS/3. And I love the high-pitched scream of that European whistle.
I don't like sounds. After a few minutes I either shut them off or turn them down. Most of my trains are postwar anyway.
