I know there are three dome cars. One coach dome, one with conductors window, and one with a lounge and crew dorm. I think the Califonia Zepher started with 11 cars.
I am planning on buying the entire set of cars but I am a little confused. The CZ usually ran with 11 cars?
how many car names are there? I think I have counted 22, is that correct?
Sorry for the simple questions.
thanks,
dave
There were a total of 73 cars built for the California Zephyr. They basically broke down into six 10 car trainsets; 3 to the Burlington, 2 to the Western Pacific and 1 to the Rio Grande. The extras could cover cars removed for maintenance or expansion.
The breakdown...
1948 construction
6 - Baggage
18 - Dome Coach
6 - Dome Buffet Lounge Dormitory
6 - Diner
19 - 10 roomette, 6 bedroom Sleeper
6 - 16 section Sleeper
6 - 3 bedroom, 1 drawing room Dome Observation
1952 construction:
6 - 6 bedroom, 5 compartment Sleepers
Like any passenger train, it could expand or contract to meet the passenger loading.

Good info Rusty, thanks.
All of this has been discussed in detail at length in the last 12-14 months on both the old atlas forum and here at OGR.
Just a little info for anybody in the south Florida area who likes the California Zepher passenger cars; Gold Coast Railroad Museum in south Miami FL, on SW 152nd St, has several CZ passenger cars in their collection that you can walk through.
Also the Presidential Passenger Car is there, the Ferdinan Megallen(hope I spelled it correctly). That is a car to be seen.

How could you not love these cars?
