It should be. Sometimes it's a bit difficult to get a circle to make. How much is it off by?

If I remember correctly,

0-27 = 8 pcs.
0-31 = 8 pcs.
0-42 = 12 pcs.
0-54 = 16 pcs.
0-72 = 16 pcs.

I'm might be missing a few sizes.

On 042 track it depends on who made the track, I have some that only need 8 pieces for a full circle and some that need 12. It might be 054 that takes more sections for a full circle.

And there is no set rule for how many cross ties per section in modern tubular track, as it is what the company who makes the track wants to do. Compare the new tubular track with track made over 12 years ago and there should be a difference in the number of ties on curves. Used to be 3 ties was 031, 4 ties was 042, 5 ties was 054, and six ties was 072. Now it is 3 ties for either 031 or 042 and 4 ties for 054, not sure about 072.

Thanks for clarifying that Lee. The only 0-42 I have experience with is K-Line, which takes 12 pieces. It's a weird geometry that screws everything else up when dealing with multiple radii in the track plan as I do.

K-Line 042 is 4 ties per section, and its geometry is not bad to work with once you get used to it. Think in terms of 30 degrees per section, as compared to 45 degrees for 031, and 22.5 degrees for 054/072. You will likely find that you need lots of half curves. The K-Line (later Lionel) 042 switches work well with these curves.

Even though you may be squeezed for layout space you will find that having at least one circle or mainline that is minimum 042 will allow you to run many larger scale size engines that you would not be able to run on 031. Many newer scale steamers are rated 054 minimum, but will actually navigate 042 curves just fine. Just my experience.
