When I worked in TV out of Oakland California, I would wonder a few blocks away to look at the WP. Their yard was next to Southern Pacific's yard. WP was tiny next to SP. I always liked underdogs, that's why I model Milwaukee Road. Just wondering are there many Western Pacific fans out there. Don

Like the look.....but only a few freight cars on the layout.....
Hi Don,
My main modeling focus is the New Haven.
Since I live in Alameda, however, I do have several WP engines and trains that I run on the G&O garden railroad in San Leandro. All of my equipment is freight. There is a WP consist sitting on my home layout right now. I am getting it ready to take to the club.

Joe take some pictures. Don
Don,
I used to model WP & TS some 25+ years ago. My 20'X30' trainroom had three layouts. My Std & O-Gauge tinplate layout, one each N Scale and HO. My TS took up my HO, my WP was enjoyable in N Gauge. Being a Modesto native I was raised with WP & TS in constant view. My father retired from SP then worked M&ET until his death. Do I dare say those were the good ol days.
I model the WP,currently waiting for the Atlas Zephyr Observation so I can run the Cal Zephyr Set,also rode thru the Feather River Canyon on the UP Yellow cars.

Being a native Californian, raised in the Bay Area, Western Pacific is one of my favorite lines. I try to model the southwest, and it has a prominent place on my layout. Here are my WP engines and cars.

The Wobbly is my favorite road!
Bob, what's the caboose behind your Mikado?
Sure do. Have a set of Lionel F units pulling my K-Line CZ set.
I have about three WP box cars.
I mix them in with my SF locomotives and some SF, SP and UP cars.
Two of the WP boxes have the beautiful, large feather, on them.

I don't model it, but it was the west coast connection in Utah for the Rio Grande, and
so a few cars will probably show up on my road. I have visited the WePac museum
out in the boonies in the Feather River Canyon.
I came into a beautiful restored AA set of PW Western Pacific F3's when I fist got into the hobby in 1989. They inspired me to keep an eye out for more WP although there wasn't much of it back then!
In planning a new layout for sometime in the future, I hope to have a 'coast to coast' theme featuring Santa Fe, WP, SP on the left coast with ACL, FEC, Southern, GM&O, and Seaboard to the right.
Am looking for a suitable basement now...
Prof. Chaos - In response to your question, the caboose is an MTH 20-91055 Western Pacific offset steel caboose. It came with white trim (grab irons, ladder, ...) which I repainted black, because I found the white too stark.

I don't model WP but do have a WP train made up of about 25 WP traditional size feather boxcars, a semi scale K-Line Mike and Lionel bay window caboose.
Pete
Hi Pete - That sounds like a nice train!
K-Line really offered a variety of the 'Feather Route' cars didn't they? We had quite a few over the years at the shop. It would be nice to see a consist assembled.
Can you post some photos?
Sam, There is a video floating around somewhere that a friend had taken of the train at one of our shows. I will try and locate it.
I think I have most if not all of the K-Line cars plus Atlas Industrial Rail, Lionel, Williams and RMT. More than my little engine can pull now. I am sure the Lionel Legacy Mikado could handle that train but the semi scale engine is more in keeping in the spirit of the traditional cars.

Seems to me that, for it's size, the Western Pacific was well represented on toy/model diesel engines and freight cars. And of course, since WP was partnered in the three RR's that operated the famed California Zephyr, those cars have been represented on models over the years. Not sure if they actually showed the WP ownership on about 1/3 of the cars.
As to steam engines, not saying that none have ever been produced, but i can't remember any. Possibly a WP Daylight style engine but that's about it. Be nice to see a scale rendition of one of their engines.

Lionel has done a scale USRA light Mikado lettered for WP. Not sure they had any light Mikados though. They did have some USRA heavy Mikes. The GS-64s were also done.
