I'm a collector and operator, but an items scarcity probably plays more of a role in whether I actually put an item on the track/layout or whether it goes straight to a display shelf.
I have items I've spent $1000. for and run them to death. I have several freight cars that I've spent $100. or less (most times) for and won't put anywhere near the track.
