I was looking at the OGR past issue about how to lub you engines, Run 246. I use Red and Taky II. How big/wide should the grease "thread" on the gears be?

Not very big or wide. Just wide enough to cover the gear teeth. Any wider is just a waste and might become a mess. I generally put enough grease to cover the 1/2 of each wheel gear that faces me, and even that may be too much. As the train runs, that grease will distribute evenly.
trains are one of those things that less is better.
Most folks would concur with the above 2 posts. The problem with over-greasing is mainly that it attracts dust and builds up into a sticky mess.
Add to that some greases will liquify and run down the wheels when they get warm.

What I do is put the grease on when the loco is upside down in a foam cradle, put some on, then power it up using some wire from a transformer,
