I'm just beginning ceiling layout and would appreciate some input on size of transformer needed. The track will be 15x36 atlas single track. I was looking at gw 180 and wasn't sure if it was enough power or to go with zw- c.

Wont be running any accessories.

Will be running gs- 2 (38079) thanks any advice would be appreciated.

What type of engines are you using? Lionel, MTH, Atlas or Williams? I have had some issues with Lionel transformers and MTH engines, so I would try to stay brand loyal on power: examples are Lionel engine with Lionel transformer or MTH engine with MTH transformer. Williams engines will run on almost any power source.

A 100 watt transformer should be more then enough for what you want, however you will need to add in power feed wires every 5 to 6 sections of track for best performance. Unless you are running several accessories I would not get the larger transformer.

That should be plenty of power. Regardless, don't skimp on the wire size. Use 14GA and put feeders at least every 10'

I run 3 scale steamers with the smoke features on with a single 180w brick. Layout is 11'x16' with a double track mainline. The brick also powers 8 switches and 2 sets of crossing signals.

BABY B,

I always recommend an old Lionel KW or new MTH Z-1000 as minimal power supplies for any layout.  IMO forget the CW-80, they are introductory power supplies that should be sold or discarded as soon as you can, invest in a better Transfomer, some day you will want to expand.  RickO gives good advise also, use good 14 Gauge stranded wire on your layout.

I ran 14 gauge buss and 16 gauge feeders.     I also use 2 CW-80s for two tracks.  But I ran 3 engines, one with 6 incandescent lit passenger cars.   Two of the engines were double heading 14 freight cars with a incandescent lit caboose.    All three engines with pullmor motors.   On one CW-80.    Two CW-80 equal the same amps as old ZW, but a CW-80 has built in protections for your electronics (if your engine is equipped with electronics).
