I apologize if this has been asked before. Please bear with me if it has.

My father in law gave me what appears to be an antique steam-era Lionel locomotive. It has no identification that I can see other a plate on the bottom that says 'Lionel 027'.

What is the best way to find out what I have and what is the best way to test it to learn if it is operational?

Thank you in advance.

Congrats! Sounds like the beginning of some fun for you!

Best way to find more information is to first identify the locomotive by the number on the side of the cab. You can then look it up by following this link: http://www.tandem-associates.c...ionellocomotives.htm

There are numerous forum members that will know much more than what is shown on that website, but it's a basic start.

Do you have a transformer and track? You have to be careful with the old cord wiring as it can become brittle and cause a fire hazard.

Please post some pictures and I'm sure you will get some more info from the sharp people around here and either have it running soon or know what to do to get it running again in short order. Generally, if it's in decent shape, it will need some cleaning and lubrication before you really get rolling.
