I have several of the old QSI sound board from the 90's that you put in boxcars. the cow and turkey, lion etc. The sound is good but distorts at med-hi volume.  Any way to improve the sound quality and volume.

First- I thought of replacing the speaker knowing they are 20+ years old, anyone know what speaker to use for a replacement.

Second- I thought about adding a second speaker, both new. But wasn't sure about Ohms and wattage and if the small board with only 9v battery for power can power two speakers.

Third- What about upping the watts? Or more battery power.

Fourth- Any good modern replacements that work like theem?

Thanks for your input im sure someone has played around with this.

You might to think about the better speaker, until you verify the board works right.  The capacitors on that board can be going bad/are bad.

In this case your trying to bring a 90's device up to current standards and that isn't going to happen.

A new basic speaker will tell you if the static is from a bad speaker, or capacitors going bad on the board.  G

QSI and PS-1 used 8 ohm speakers.  So pick any newer speaker with 8 ohms or a combination that gives 8 ohms.  2 4 ohm in series or 2 16 ohm in parallel, that can fit your enclosure.

Most are 50mm round with about 17mm height.

But I would look at changing capacitors before I bought a $16-20 speaker only to be still displeased.   G
