I just got through Googling and reading info on how to read screw sizes, both SAE and Metric and for machine screws plus shoulder screws.

Shoulder screw

So if I'm looking at a Lionel shoulder screw listed as follows: "6108728013 SHLDR SCR / HEX / .156" x .078" x 3 mm x .5 thd" how should I interpret which measurements are which?

1. I see inches and millimeters mixed in Lionel's description of this part, is that correct?

2. I assume the 3 mm measurement is the should diameter, or SD as depicted above. Is that correct?

3. I assume the .5 thd is the thread pitch in millimeters (THD above), is that correct?

4. What does the .156" represent?

5. What does the .078" represent?

Oddly, the above drawing does not list the diameter of the threaded portion, shouldn't it?

Thanks Pete! I'm always curious where people learn things, but when I went to Google this topic, there were a couple of sources that took me right off the deep end with a gazillion different measurements! All I want to do is to be able to pick up a screw in one hand, a caliper in the other, and figure out what the measurements are for the screw - I now know that - thanks!!
