I am starting construction on a special run kit from HRM Laser Models. HRM founder Scott paid me a visit while back and asked me if there was any building that he could design for me. To my surprise he eagerly agreed to do the famous 1901 Milwaukee Road Wausau depot. He had already done this in HO, and had to upscale to O gauge.

This depot is somewhat famous for being used in TV and print advertising for Employers Mutual Insurance, you old timers may remember these TV ads on 60 Minutes show in the 1970s. The name was eventually changed to Wausau Insurance, and now the brand is part of Liberty Insurance. The real building has had a recent extensive renovation and is now Timekeeper Distillery.

The O scale building has a foot print of 11" by 40". Here are some pictures of the kit parts laid out before construction. Including the shingle strips, there are about 700 parts to this kit!

Is your project including the  REA freight house to the south of the station, and I could pull uo the web site how are they doing the bricks

We talked about the freight house, but it would be about 10" X 18" in O. I don't think I have the space available. The bricks are laser cut. I did some mortar test runs on some scraps. Being that this kit is wood, water based mortar will badly warp the pieces. The mortar on the real building is quite dark, so I think I will just paint the brick and leave it at that. Stay tuned for updates.

I have delt with the warping before and have had some relief by sealing the components with flat lacquer, before painting. I had hoped to have purchased, and constructed the  Milwaukee Road Switch tower by now , but have  Dealing with my RA and now flood clean up.    Looking forward to your progress

Pretty substantial block of real estate and more after it gets its surrounding scenery.  Think the station that's planned for my ongoing project will be about 6" x 4" or smaller,

I was a little surprised at the size of this when Scott told me, but I checked my layout space and it will work out just fine. Post some pictures of your station project for us.

I remember those commercials well. I will look for the H O version of this station.

If you want the HRM model, e-mail Scott and ask for a price. It is not listed at this time, but most likely he will cut one out for you. Walthers made a model of this a while ago. It is called City Station, item number 933-2904. It is my understanding that the Walthers model is a little short when compared to the prototype. The HRM models are designed from the actual original blueprints.

Thank you. Will see what I can find out.
