Just got tickets in the Hickory Creek 20th Century observation car for my birthday. Went on sale this AM. They are running many more excursions to Albany from NYC this year. Their two cars are attached to the rear of an Amtrak train along the Hudson. Rides in the Hickory Creek include a four course meal served in the car. Looking forward to my birthday present this year.

Is Amtrak relaxing it's policy on excursions and private car moves? In March 2018 previous Amtrak president Richard Anderson banned charter trains and excursions and severely restricted PV moves in the name of cost cutting.
They offered many more trips this year including one NYC to Chicago. All are sold out. Hickory Creek has just received an upgraded generator for this years service.
what is the average price of a ticket NYC-ALBANY....thanks
In the observation car is in the $400-500 range, but that includes a meal and drinks. About half that in the club car but the meal is a buffet only and you pay for drinks. My wife and I decided to go "first class" in Hickory Creek. At 81 won't get many more chances to go on a trip like this.
Have fun. Some of the local train guys here in Albany thought about it, but since the trip starts in NYC and travels to Albany we would need to drive to the city, spend the night, right the train up and back to the city, spend the night, and then drive up again to Albany. That's a lot of travel for the trip.
They are running an auction and lottery (for the chance to purchase tickets) for the round trip NYC to Chicago. Hickory Creek and a sleeper on the rear of the Lake Shore Limited. Lottery winners agree to purchase tickets at the listed price. 75th Anniversary Special
They also have a page where you can get on the email list to be informed about next years trips.
The auction is up to $7599 for two round trip sleeper/observation tickets NYC to Chicago. Closes at 10PM EST, still time to bid.
