A friend sent me this photo from the thirties, I think. It shows a what I think is a Hudson on 6th st in Troy NY . Somehow I found this photo very interesting. The snow perhaps, and all the people.Fred

Those charts are laid out precisely...so many knots for so many seconds
Everyone knows a berkshire is the only locomotive steerable on ice
All silliness aside, thats an amazing photo, thanks for posting it Fred!

That was not me running the Hudson.
That was my older brother, Softiron Scher
No way to say for certain what caused that accident, but, it is not unusual for ice to build up in the gauge at road crossings and cause cars to rise up above the railhead and make their own tracks through the countryside. If one is careful and the cars aren't too far away from the rails, you can actually pull them right back on rerailing them.
Are those manual gates at the crossing? They are up and the loco is across the crossing
Yes, those are definitely manual gates. Pneumatic.
We have problems here with snow mobiles running along the tracks. These pack down the snow and have been known to cause derailment. Train crews hate them with a passion.
