What good is it to add Lionel engines to my DCS WI-FI when I already have over 100 DCS engines. Why would I buy Lionel serial device to run Legacy and TMCC engines when I would have delete one of my DCS engines just to run it? I can't be the only one with this many locomotives. Now that the premier F and E units are separate DCS units that means a AA  E or F unit that once required 1 engine slot now use three locomotive slots. One for each engine and another one for the "Lash-Up". Don't get me wrong I like getting rid of the tether. I also love the sound of having sounds come out of both A units. It is also neat to have the engines come together separately as you create the consist. However it still takes up more engine slots on the APP than it did before, that's an issue for me. Please expand the number of locomotives with DCS.

If you read the DCS note from the meeting, that is already in the works.

It was posted that future app updates, may have more than 99 engine slots available. Why they did not do that already, is a mystery to me.

I also need more addresses on the remote (or app). I have asked a couple of times. Either MTH felt that there weren't many of us that needed this right away, or they didn't want to sell us more engines?

Maybe the remote is the reason?

The new way of providing AA units as separately controlled units is going to have a huge affect on the engine slot availability. Consider this, I have the following AA or ABBA;

Chessie F-3

C&O E-8

N&W F-7

N&W E-8

NYC E-8

NYC Sharknose

NYC F-3

Norfolk Southern F-7

Clinchfield F-7

Wabash E-8

So under the older system of engine tethers I would use up 10 engine slots on my Remote/App. If they were all the newer version where each powered unit is a separate DCS unit then this would take up 30 engine slots-using almost 1/3 of the 100 available engine slots.

You made 2 mistakes in this thread....

1st   You admitted you had more than 100 engines.  Mrs. Smith reads the forum, does she not?

2nd  You didn't attend the or read the DCS meeting notes.  Dave said that the 99 limit is being addressed.

1) She can count---she knows we have a lot.
2) I didn't attend the DCS Meeting and didn't know the notes were posted.

I just hope this is addressed sooner rather than later.

Scott,

Your problem has a workaround solution of sorts right now.

Since you can import a complete layout's worth of DCS engines, switch tracks, accessories, etc., into a DCS App in a few seconds, without using a computer, try this:

  • Load up your DCS Application with a batch of engines, plus whatever else you like. You can also do this by importing a remote backup file.
  • Export that load via E-mail and receive it back on all of your smart devices.
  • Delete the engines and build a load with a different set of engines, reusing the same DCS ID#s as necessary.
  • Export this one via E-mail and receive it back on the same smart devices,

Now, you have, in effect, two different "remotes" worth of stuff available for all of your smart devices that run the DCS App. Each is available in a few seconds, whenever you desire.

Also, 2 isn't the limit.

Can you have Batch#1 on Device #1 and Batch#2 on Device #2 and use both devices? Obviously, you cannot use the same engine # from both devices at the same time.

Anybody remember Y2K?
The 99 engine limit may be related to coding / field lengths.
It could take a bit of time and effort to fix.

I know folks who made gobs of money checking and fixing code to make it Y2K compliant.

That's unlikely in Y2017.

Its probably a number picked, arbitrarily, that should work for the majority of users - with the knowledge that they could raise it later if necessary.

The lower number might also make initial debugging easier.

Yes, I understand how anyone can acquire such a large amount of engines and rolling stock/pass consists.  My engine count alone is over 250 and climbing, albeit at a slower pace than in past years.  When you include the Lionel Prewar and postwar, Marx, MTH, Atlas..... well, just about all manufactures (Bing, Hafner, Prewar AF, etc.) it is easy to do.  Just hang on to everything ever acquired since a kid in the '50s-'60s that my Dad and I enjoyed together.  When you count all pieces (rolling stock, pass., accessories, etc.) it is, well, over too much....... so some would say.  I could run nothing but passenger consists and not have enough track on my 24' X 28' layout.  Yes, I am constantly updating my inventory lists and pictures But, I enjoy every bit of it, and the memories/sentimental is immeasurable.  I know I am not the only one with such, and as we all do, enjoy it all the more when shared with others.
