MTH's Baldwin sounds aren't half bad. I would give Proto-Sound 3 a try, because if you went the TMCC route, you would only have TMCC features, whether controlling via Legacy or DCS+Legacy/TMCC. Anything can be done if you put your mind to it. Good luck on your upgrade!
I know nothing about MTH but I do know that adding TMCC to that set is easy . And you can go to err and listen to the different sound cards before you buy so you know how they sound. Go to ERR and open the link to the purchase then rail sounds and then you can listen to the different ones
Kinda depends on which command system you have??? If both system on your layout it boils down to which you like. Installing ANY system in Williams locos is about the same. The Shark has DC motors so nothing hard.....just $$$$$
DCS has so many more features than TMCC w/Sound and they cost about the same Dave.
With Mike's new Wi-Fi setup you can control both systems from your phone and from what I heard at the DCS meeting at York, the MTH app actually runs Legacy/TMCC better than the Lionel system.
I've upgraded several Williams diesels to TMCC using the Cruise Commander from Electric RR. While upgrades do exist for both DCS and TMCC, I prefer the TMCC upgrade just for ease of use. While you get more with the DCS upgrades, I don't use all the stuff. For operation and sound, to me, TMCC is the way to go.
