I have a question about a Lionel 773 Celebration series tender. Item number 6-38096. There is a what looks like a potentiometer at the front of the tender. What is it's purpose? It's only visible when you take the shell off.

That is volume control.
Bill, do you mean that is a second volume control? There is one that is in the manual that you get to from the bottom of the tender. It is mounted at the rear of the tender. Very curious.
Yes, I took the shell off and it turns the sound down. The other looks to be at the front of the rear truck. While I was there I changed my battery, best by date of 2011!
