The Railsounds works but is filled with a lot of static. I don't what version it is. I googled info but didn't come with what rs it is what needs to be done Possible replacement. Plus the 2 wire tether is a real pain

With those older units, fixing the static in the sound is frequently just reseating the boards and the PLCC chips on the audio board. You'll need a PLCC extractor to reseat the PLCC chips, do NOT try prying them out of the sockets with anything else!

Bob if your loco is "stock," it doesn't have RailSounds. 6-8210 was made in 1981, long before any version of RailSounds. It originally had the Mighty Sound of Steam with electronic whistle. Some folks refer to that system as "the mighty sound of static." It's basically a white-noise generator, and the '80s whistle versions are nowhere near as crisp as the discrete circuits from the early '70s.
How about posting some photos of what's in the tender? Also, make sure the bottom of whatever circuit boards are in there don't come into contact with the metal tender frame. (It can be insulated with a layer or two of double-sided tape.) Good luck!
