At rest are Lionel archived  Madison cars in silver and red which were supposedly intended to accompany Lionel’s post-war Santa Fe war bonnet F3’s but were never manufactured.  In lieu of these the aluminum streamliners were made.  Good choice Lionel.😃These cars were produced in 1997 but were not particularly good sellers.  They are being pulled by a Lionel post-war celebration TMCC 2328 Burlington GP7.  I still think these are kind of neat.  I sometimes run them at Christmas time because of their bright red and silver colors.EF1670BA-4213-4CF5-8A14-1D13444FFA32

Lionel’s reproduction “Anniversary Set” from the early 1990s circles my layout.  Despite not quite matching the brilliant golden hue of a pristine original set from 1950 the passenger cars from this set still look pretty spiffy as they glide around the Shenandoah Short Line behind repro Lionel Alcos.

Holy cow, I have a few but not like some of you. My favorite has to be the Weaver Hiawatha in the lower photo. Have a few more other road names in boxes.  Trying to justify a UP set to run with my BigBoy, and an Illinois Central and ...   Do Interurbans, Trolleys and Subways count toward passenger cars?  This is an under construction passenger terminal yard. Wish I had another 10 feet to work with.

Last layout photo before I had to take the layout down. The Hiawatha is leaving town for the last time.

I should have included this set in my above post.  These were made by K-Line of the NCDOT that ran the Amtrak passenger service in the area I now live.

K-Line also made the F59PHI's that pull these consist the "City of Salisbury" and "City of Asheville/"

1755 was the year that Salisbury, NC was founded.

The real "City of Salisbury" residing at the North Carolina Transportation Museum.

Off the top of my head (and after several middle-of-the-night trips to my "archives"), I think I have a few:

--Lionel Amtrak GG-1 set from the 1980's

--Lionel first-issue Acela (6 cars)

--Lionel Metro-North M7 electric MU set (6 cars)

--K-Line Golden State aluminum set plus E-8 AA's (except for the second dome car--still looking for that one)

I made up a C&O passenger set to go with my K-Line C&O F3's, the six-motor KCC set capable of warp speed. I got a 4-car set of Williams 18" coaches, then added an MTH sleeper/diner set as a supplement.

While building my Amtrak Auto-Train, I accumulated, among other things:

  • MTH premier 4-car  Superliner coach set
  • MTH premier 4 and two-car Superliner set (coach/baggage, diner, sleeper, sighsteer lounge, and presumably two coaches) , plus an add-on transition sleeper
  • K-Line 4-car 18" Superliners
  • Lionel 4-car Superliners (jumped the gun, ended up with a Phase III striped set, but have decals to make it Phase IV)

I have what I believe are three six-car consists of Amfleet cars:

  • MTH premier Amfleet, phase III striping (with AEM7)
  • MTH premier Amfleet, Phase IV striping (stainless plated, with AEM7)
  • Lionel NEC Amfleet set (plus 3 coaches from a set break-up + cab car) with HHP-8

--Oh, almost forgot, six-car sets of 15" Amfleet and Superliners from Williams.

--Five car Welz amfleet set

--Three-car and two-car Williams Amtrak RDC sets, and a four-car set of Williams first-gen Amfleet coaches.

--K-Line eight-car 15" Bombardier coach with Metro-North F3

--Atlas O (Connecticut DOT/Metro-North) five-car Bombardier coach set, with K-Line EP-5

--K-Line Greenport Scoot (with 2-car add-on)

--Lionel Hogwarts Express with 2-car add-on set, Dementors' coach, and three more coaches from a set break-up. Total: 9 cars

--MTH premier Santa Fe coach set (stainless plated) 4-car+sleeper/diner+baggage/coach+RPO+full vista dome, pulled by a premier 2900-series ATSF Northern

--MTH Electroliner

--3rd Rail Electroliner and Greenliner

--GGD Viewliner assortment (baggage, crew dorm, diner and two sleepers)

--Assorted loose MTH premier coaches intended to build a custom-painted Amtrak Exhibit train:

  • Metra amfleet cafe
  • B&M baggage (production sample)
  • PRR baggage
  • 4 Santa Fe coaches (one is a production sample)
  • 2 Santa Fe sleepers (one is a production sample)
  • Santa Fe baggage
  • Santa Fe observation (production sample)

Aaaaand, 105 subway cars

Edit: 4/29/23: Late addition 'cause I just remembered after reviewing the list following the latest like notification:

--AtlasO NJ transit coaches (three or four) with an AtlasO NJT ALP44 or an MTH NJT ALP46

Huh...it appears I have a lot of passenger cars

My most recent additions to the passenger fleet - some Lionel 18” Amtrak Phase III coaches and a cab car…

Did you re-wire the headlights/markers as they are wired backwards at the factory? Mine are but I have not done it yet as it requires opening up the car.

Also, I had thought about a: removing that light bar; and b: converting it back to a Metroliner. I would use a Williams Metroliner to get the correct trucks.

Anyway, they are nice cars, I have the HHP-8 starter set, one add-on two-car set, and the cab car. If Lionel ever offers the snack bar car, that would make into a nice Northeast Regional.

OK fellows, those are just beautiful streamlined passenger cars, but how about some old fashioned clerestory coaches from the earlier periods of our hobby?  Here are some from my archives.

First is the Lionel 2328 from 1955-56 pulling 244x series pw cars.

What a great colorful group of train photos Don.  Couldn't stop smiling .

Thanks for sharing.

I'd be a bit nervous to go down and start counting, but I know I have several sets.  I love passenger cars so it's easy to like this thread.

Most of mine are 18."  I have some of the newer Lionel 21" cars and those will track on my 0-54 layout.  I have Lionel and MTH cars.  I was interested in the Atlas Zephyr cars and some of the GGD sets but those end up being 0-72.

i sold of my K-line aluminum Santa Fe cars a few years ago.  Those were gorgeous.

John

I bought that same set years ago, but use my Williams 681 turbine instead of the Lionel loco:  at first glance, it looks like it just leaped from the ‘48 catalog

Thanks, had the same idea have a PW Lionel Turbine bought for repair, repainted and was going to use that turbine to have the honors to move this set around the layout. Mark

This is a Lionel Set 6-11712 The Great Lakes Express from 1990 had 9 years second time out of box, bought sealed. Engine is going back in the box, thinking will let grand daughter be the first to run.

Beautiful Kughn Era set, Mark! I'm jealous! Being a Chicago native, I love everything pertaining to the Great Lakes. The steamer looks like the PW 2037/2018 Adriatic with more detailed running gear. Kughn did a great job bringing back so many of the PW and MPC offerings with detail and technical improvements and MADE IN USA!

Thanks Bill, second time out of the box and first time on the rails. Yes Lionel did dress up the side rods to give it a better look. They should have placed a whistle inside that tender! I put the engine away will run it with my S-2 or K4. God Speed keep those rails shinning Bill
