Don't know if any of you have done this or are thinking about doing it but I'm sell off things that at one time I thought I would never sell. A month or so ago I started selling a few 40's and 50's Lionel items. I haven't run any of it in years. I intended to keep my very best stuff. As most of you know I only run Milwaukee scale three rail. Why keep any of the old stuff and leave it in boxes. When I was younger I thought someday I can have walls of my old trains for display. I really enjoy building my new layout and don't see any need to keep the old Lionel and MTH. I have a Lionel #5c Test Set from the train store I went to as a kid. I'm only the second owner of the set but it's time to let it go. I also have things like a MTH clear bodied GP-9 from another of my favorite stores. It all goes on E-bay next week. Anyone else thinking of doing this? Don

Fortunately or not, we live in a world of limited space....and finance for that matter. Many people end up in this "boat".
Over time, I've come to greatly respect people who sell what they don't use very often. If not, you'll end up with a bunch of "stuff" that literally just takes up space....that could be used for something else.
As the hobby has changed over the past 15 years or so, it's given us the ability to really concentrate our collections/layouts in areas that we enjoy the most....which is a good thing, IMHO.
Hey Don, Have you got a 100 ton Golden Gate Depot coaling tower??? I'm looking hard for one.... Name the price.
To answer your question, I have never been a collector so I haven't accumulated lots of "stuff". I do have numerous unused items and every so often I'll sell some of the items or I scrap them for parts...
I'm also in this part of the journey as well, and it has been very interesting. Many trains that I thought I would keep forever have been boxed, accounted for and readied for their trip to their next owners. I believe that what I used to feel was really important to have turned out to be not important at all.
Many of us appear to be arriving at his same point, and for me personally,I feel so much lighter and a palpable sense of freedom. I can focus on the trains and scenic stuff I like to do without piles of boxes in the way. I like this part of my train life right now!

I have some UP/CNW heritage rolling stock that I've been thinking about getting rid of (passenger cars, green covered hoppers, and a couple of HyCubes) because I've either only run them once or not at all. They're taking up space and because I've been infected with Prototypus Fidelitus (compulsive attraction to prototype fidelity) I don't see myself using them. The delay is because I haven't had time to photograph them for eBay.
I started and then.. I realized that the value of what I was selling was far less than replacements..so I am embarking upon kitbashing and doing some weird stuff. Including taking a RMT mini RDC and melding it with a lionel rdc 400 shell into a Susquehanna rdc. an old MPC era manual reverse SW1500, into a NYSW switcher with electronic e unit etc..
pretty much dragged it all out started to list it and then got cold feet
How much for the test board?
Look at it this way, you have not succumbed to getting "stuck" at one point in your life. What a blessing that you feel free to move on. Did someone make a movie and titled it "Don't Look Back"?
Wood, I don't have that coaling tower, sorry. It feels good to sell this stuff. I have pulled about eight moving boxes of trains out already. Don
Am interested to see your items. How will you list them for sale(your seller name)?
Thanks Don, I had to ask.. The GGD is a rare and very nice coaling tower. Agree with hold*on -

my most cherished items are those that were given to me by those now long gone. :-( and :-)for the memories!
Hold*on, it's dvmacc. Don
Don - Thanks for sharing that info, it was thought provoking. Makes me want to see what I may have that is that same category.

Hi Don, I started selling most of my 3 rail stuff back in 2012 on eBay. I also put up a lot of military models I had bought, and thought I would NEVER sell, but I did. Sorry to see them go but I did very well and made more money than I paid for all that stuff. That made me kinda feel good about selling. Now, I'm using that money to buy more train stuff in 2 rail O and G scales. Go figure.

Don, there's probably not many days I don't feel like unloading...
I, too, dread the thought of the task...
When I was most active acquiring, I never thought I'd lose the passion; but, I did.
Other interests came and went; I thought trains were here to stay.
I think this hobby has a significant amount of repetition... that, eventually, becomes boring.
I've got a decent pile boxed up, and some out; don't do much with it these days. Still look at it, though.
For years, I've sort of felted"trapped" by it; I don't like a lot of clutter, and excess baggage. Layouts actually get old(tiresome) too; dusty and old.
It must feel good, lightening the load. Makes me feel good, just thinking about being free...

Hello, what is your selling name on ebay?I only run old stuff, and am trying to add items as I go.Very Interested in taking a look at what you have.
I can see selling off the trains that are no longer prized. IMHO, you might want to think twice about selling your Test Bench.
Should you change your mind about the trains, there aren't very many pieces that are likely to be difficult to replace. Lionel test benches are another matter. Plus the one you have has history that is meaningful to you.
I will be watching for your auctions.
Good luck.
