I am off this week. On of my retired friends has a 3 yr old grandson who will be arriving in the next few days who loves trains. He took his family Lionel's out.....and they needed some help.....

I packed my "black bag" in the car and drove to his home.....

He has 2 nice sets. One is his father's which I thought was late 30s and I confirmed that in the Lionel 1938 catalog.

The other set is from 57....the O Gauge Wabash Geep set. My picture just didn't turn out. Her is the catalog spread.....

The trains will need a deep clean and tune up......they haven't been touched for about 50 years. Neither endine rubs, though the headlights came on......I suspect both E units have decayed. The 4 pairs ofO22 switches and switch controllers need a complete re-wiring.

The track needs a few hours of elbow grease with isopropyl alcohol and Scotchbright pads.

The obviously owned a Lionel Road Race set during the 60s. I found this piece among the piles of stuff....

While the trains are being cleaned up/repaired, I lent  my friend a working 2018 and a CW 80 transformer.

Peter,

I do believe Santa will be extra nice to you this year.  After all you are fixing up the same trains he delivered some  60+ years ago.  He will be very happy with you indeed.

Ed.........make no mistake....I will not be fixing them........I will direct him to a good repairman......their damage is far beyond my basic skills........I would make them worse!

CW.....I had never seen that power pack before.

I did not mention that I dabble in 1960's Lionel HO and "Standard" sized slot cars. I have a few sets, plus a fair number of separate sale pieces. I've only seen those packs once or twice. I picked mine up down at York.

In regards to fixing up the trains for your friend's grandson: I also think it is a very nice thing to do.
Folks often worry about how to "grow the hobby". IMHO, helping someone get an old family train set going is one way.

CW.....unfortunately, the repairs are beyond my skills by I directed him  to a good repairman....in the meantime( while a skilled repairman does his magic), he has a safe transformer (one of my CW80s) and one of my 2018 steamers, which is a great runner.....
