Yes indeed, Barry, different situations do call for different solutions.
Do let us know which tool or device you decide on to assist you in the situations you've mentioned.
Seems like creating a tool or device to use in a situation such as you've described would be a worthwhile project for a fledging model railroading entrepreneur. Might take more r&d than anticipated and likely not produce that many sales to be that financially profiitable but the end product would certainly be appreciated by many railroading hobbyists such as yourself.
Good luck with whatever you tool decide on and please keep us informed of the workable choice you make.

Good timing for me on this topic. The last few weeks I have been thinking I need one of these. I just read posts from beginning and was hoping that someone foundthe perfect one. No such thing....I know.

I will however be buying one of some sort in the near future. I have only two hard to reach spots but somehow I manage to derail in those areas every few weeks. If what I buy turns out to work well I'll post results.

Today I purchased the "Ettore 49036 Grip 'n Grab" from Amazon, the same one that hojack recommended from his personal experiences using it.

Selling points were hojack's recommendation, a steel cable for pulling the jaws closed, a  padded gripper with good closing characteristics for grasping cars and engines, and the rotating handle, as well as  Amazon's user-friendlky return policy!

Thanks to all of you who participated in the selection process. I'll let you know how well it works after it arrives next week.
