Does anybody have any luck with these bulk 1:43 or 1:48 scale people from China?  I have a number of scenic express, arttista, etc., and these look somewhat inferior, but if you want to fill a scene (or a city!) fast and cheap, I don't think it can be beat.

Fine; hop on a plane to China and let us know what you think . I have some (1:48 but not really) and they are fine for crowds and populating passenger cars. You can repaint as needed, and they offer unpainted ones (smaller quantities too). For as cheap as they are I find it hard to believe some people aren't willing to gamble 10 or 20 bucks to discover something that could be the greatest deal since the internet; but I guess there will always be folks willing to let the other guy get the arrows in his back.

I have bought these too, Wehonest is the seller and they sometimes offer "well painted" figures also but at a much higher price. I like the ones I have and did a little touch up with the hair colors of the people. I got a batch with all black hair people so I needed to make some blonds and greys. These look like the same people marketed for the German company Preisser.

I have purchased these type of bulk people. Note that most people are standing.

I washed them with India ink mixed with water to tone down the colors. I also cut off the legs to fit them into passenger cars. can't see this from the outside of the car. I glue them down with clear acrylic calking, which has as much substance as you need to make them fit the mating surface, then dries clear for invisibility.

Price is so cheep that they serve well in the background or a few feet away from the table edge.

I would buy more if I needed them. Joe K

Well, I just ordered them.  We'll see!  I think will be fine for my needs.  Kids come over and play with stuff and tired of $5 people getting vacumed up.

I stick with known-brand figures I buy from my LHS and from various US shop internet sites when the LHS doesn't have what I need.  I suspect many of those cheap figures from china/indonesia/pau-pau/whereever are unlicensed knockoffs of legitimate business's products simply copied by mold replication without permission.  Whether they are or not, I spent more but I support both companies I know and like and various retailers here - all of whom I want to be here for me tomorrow.

I still repaint a lot of them anyway . . . .

I'll join the consensus and say they are great for background, or even to repaint into more detailed people!  You won't be happy with them in the foreground as they are (just as the others said) painted in 50s/60s style clothing and colors to match.  But for a crowd, indoors, or in the background they are perfect!  The seller "Webehonest" on EBay has always been cheap and shipped fast.  I have purchased at least three lots of these for background and passenger car passengers.  Many times I go through them and pick out the best poses and repaint a bunch in more modern clothing and they look good up front too!

I have bought from them before as well. Can't beat the price, although I just use them for building or passenger car interiors and save my better looking, more expensive figures for outside or easily seen locations. They also have some decent park benches and streetlights. If you ask they will sell you packs of all seated people at a slightly higher price.
