First off I hope I have placed this in the right forum.

My Dad recently moved full time down here to Florida from Michigan.  He grew up in Detroit as a child and retire from the scrap yard on the East side of the city a few years ago.  With him came his train set that my wife and him have been discussing about putting together.

Yesterday we pulled it out and the he told us that when he was a kid they burned it up.....  after we hooked it to power and watched smoke start coming out.  I looked online to find info on the train and what I could do to restore it to working order and realized he has something that I can find not much info on.

I have included a couple pics, he has all the track and cars to go with.  You can see the little windows all burnt out.  He claims a friend of his as a child and him were playing together and rigged it up.  This was his Grand Father's Train.

Thanks for the look and any info you have would be fantastic.

Yes you put it in the right place on the forum. That item is and I  am sure you have figured this out a Leland Monorail set which runs on a overhead rail system. here is a link to some history

http://www.train99.com/ency/leland/leland.html

it runs on 6 to 12 volts. The problem could be finding a replacement motor or a suitable substitute. If you could find a real good old Lionel repair man in Florida should be possible to get it repaired.

MTH made a very nice traditional ( no fancy modern electronics ) version of this item and they are still available if you look around on the internet. There is one available on "the bay" right now. Since the MTH version is traditional with a motor just like the original you might want to contact MTH repair parts ( before it all goes away ) they just might have a motor. If you need a transformer to power it any modern transformer or an old but serviceable Lionel one will work fine.  Hope this is helpful. Please let us know how you make out.

"Maybe check with Hennings, a very reliable forum sponsor!"

An excellent suggestion Art!

I thought about suggesting that very thing when I posted my response. But since the gentleman mentioned he lives in Florida I thought he might not want to deal with sending the item to Pennsylvania. However Art is right, at the very least give Henning's a call. I too hope that you can get your family heirloom train repaired and running fine once again.
