Hi Folks , I recently acquired the nice little fellow below , originally I was drawn to it by the similarity to the Bing British example that I have shared here with you all ...

After looking thru the photos a lot more closely , my mind is turning slightly towards it perhaps being pre-war Brimtoy ? Wells? or similar ( I really need to find me a set of British Toy Trains but at $50 postage per book on ebay and at most sellers ,its really putting me off buying them )

SO for your delectation and perusal let me entertain you ( lol )..... VVVVVVV

Now If we compare it to Bing British its kinda similar , but mebbe not? ( wheels for sure tho) and tinplate rather than cast chimney...

Either way its definately got a factory added on cylinders and cowcatcher ( for the US market I assume)

So wondering if this is another Stephan Bing UK creation , or as the tinkling in my meager brain possibly indicates an early Mettoy/Brimtoy/Wells creation ? Either way I think the "US-iffication " of it probably lends it to being a not common variant?

@sncf231e and @FRENCHTRAINS

What say you ?

( or indeed anyone )

Thanks for looking Fred

@Jim O'C  I think I can safely bet my left knacker the shell is not Hornby

The mech is def not up to the usual robustness of the time and does suggest a "lower" tier manufacturer , which is simlar as well to the Bing British which had a lightweight mech, as well as Brimtoy/Wells/Mettoy

This shot also shows the fitment of the cowcatcher and cylinders , they are fitted in a way that looks to me to be a factory add on to a basic frame . The attachment doesnt speak to me of a layperson add-on ? I could be wrong of course ...

This also came from an estate of a pretty well connected collector here in Aus so I kind of expect some kind of provenance that died with him sadly ... I note the weight is also similar to Mettoy/Brimtoy ?

I remember seeing a Brimtoy/Mettoy fitted with a cowcatcher for an export run somewhere on the web , but for the life of me cant find it

Thanks Bryan ( and WELCOME! )

The 5600 and russet brown is an homage to the LMS railway in the UK , also used by Hornby for their Tank engines (No.1 and 501 series ) I know the L shape cab cutout Brimtoy to which you refer and its interesting that it too has cowcatcher AND buffers as well .. This one tho is stumping me

Darn I was really pinning my hopes on it being recognisable from one of the Foster books ... I have been able to track down pretty much everything in my collection apart from this loco and one other ...

However this one ^^^^ I am pretty sure is a "bespoke " period one off

These two Mystery locos will drive me to my grave LOL!!!
