For those not aware, awhile back the owners of the roundhouse in Portland Oregon informed the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation that a new home would need to be found for the SP4449 and a couple of other steam engines owned by the city of Portland. Just before the deadline to be out the enginge were moved to their new home, the Oregon Rail Heritage Center. Visitors are welcome to come and see history up close. My wife and I stopped by one Saturday a few weeks ago and even she was in awe as we walked around. Here is a couple pictures just to show how open the area is for viewing these monsters of the past.

My wife Amy posing in front of the SP 4449. (Can't get much closer than

actually leaning up against her (the Steam Engine!)

Some place I have a picture that we took when I removed my prosthetic leg

and hung it upside down in the front coupler!

For all you "F" unit fans here is the latest restoration that is being

done in the shops. Word is that it won't be long before NKP #190

roars to life once again.

Here is SP&S #700 up close:

The guides that are there are very knowledgable. One could spend hours just looking and talking about the history of the restorations and the engines history itself. You will not be disappointed. Also be sure to check out the Oregon Zoo Train at the Oregon zoo.

Also if you are into logging railroad equipment and a great meal be sure to check out Camp 18 on Rt. 26 heading toward the coast. Again very neat equipment that gives one an up close look at the Northwest's logging history.

No! The UP Challenger hasn't run since the summer of 2010, plus hasn't been to Portland for many years.

OK Thanks.  What was the visitor there at the end of January?

None, to my knowledge. Certainly NOT UP, as their #844 is put away, in Cheyenne, for the winter.
