Details always capture my attention on engines especially added lighting such as ground lights on diesels or work lights on Steam Engines.  When I bought my Milwaukee Road S3 a couple years ago, I thought illuminated gauges in the cab were a nice added feature from Lionel.  See the photos below.  Recently, I asked a friend who has the Vision Line Big Boy if any of gauges in the cab illuminated.  He told me that there were none.  He also told me that he thought a couple of the first Vision Line engines had lighted gauges, SF 2-10-10-2 and Pennsy 0-8-8-0.   Yesterday, I was looking at 3rd rails website I saw that one of their engines, Timken 4-8-4, that is schedule for delivery soon, will have this feature too.  Out of curiosity, I was wondering if there were any other Lionel Legacy engines that have this feature or when is the last time Lionel included this feature on one of their steam engines? Ken

Great topic for discussion and great pictures; between better quality & engine specific sounds, more detailed lighting all around, and more smoke specific details; our locomotives and tender will be really getting closer to the originals.  HOW Exciting to be able to bring back a part of the past that we may or may not have experienced and be able relive those days when ever we want.  To be able to do that and pass it on to my children and friends (you guys included) EXCITING!

Thanks for your comments guys.   Thank you, F30MSport, for information about this feature with your VL Big Boy and the other earlier Vision Line Steamers.  In looking at the online Lionel catalogs for all the Vision Line Steam Engines except for the VL Big Boy have a listed feature saying, “Enhanced realistic lighting in cab interior.”  So I assume, “Enhanced realistic lighting in cab interior” means the lighted gauges in the cab.  However, for my Legacy Milwaukee Road S3, the Lionel catalog says nothing about “Enhanced realistic lighting in cab interior” in the feature list other than the typical cab light.  I only have one other Lionel Legacy steam engine, Crescent Limited 4-6-2, but it does not have this feature.

The Milwaukee Road S3 was delivered to dealers in late 2011 so again I wondered if there were any other Legacy Steam Engines since then or even before then that have this feature or if Lionel only put it in all the earlier Vision Line Steamer Engines and S3?  For those of you have Legacy Steam Engines, take look to see if your engines have this feature!

"lighting" or "lighted gauges" would be correct, so do we really know what they mean? They don't seem to know, themselves.

Arthur

My spelling mistake in the post...it should be "Enhanced realistic lighting in cab interior"

Not a kit, Frank.  I used 1.5V grain-o-wheat types for both head lights and dash light because they're cheap.   Also, their reduced heat production should avoid the damage to plastic caused by higher voltage bulbs.  I simply drilled holes in the dash where the gauges would be and taped the bulb in behind with black cloth tape to prevent light leakage.
