I have one of the first Thomas's  pre bluetooth.  Can't imagine they upgraded the speaker much.  Not enough room.  You could try a baffle.

Else a mega bass in Annie and Clarabelle. 😉

Well, the selection will be based on what fits.  I haven't looked in the Thomas for a long time, but I remember a pretty small speaker, so you'll have to pick one that you can cram in there.

I contacted Lionel about this and was told the volume was intentionally kept low for children's hearing.

I asked that question awhile back. A bluetooth transmitter to my 500w JBL subwoofers would seem to do the trick, although I have not tried it yet.

The Lionel site says it is an 8 ohm speaker.  In the pic attached, the two yellow wires lead to the speaker.  There is no room for a baffle above it.  I am thinking of bypassing it and mounting a small speaker into the space just in front of the frame assembly (open area at top of picture).  will need a small speaker that does not exceed 1-1/4" x 2-1/8" size, including a surround for it.  Would appreciate a suggestion to source the speaker needed.

According to the back of the existing speaker, it is rated 1.5w and 8 ohms.  Fumbling for choices based on the existing ratings, I am considering switching to the speaker listed below.  At 28mm (1.1 inches) it would fit into the cavity in front of the frame.  Now for the question that reveals my complete ignorance of this sort of thing, is there any benefit to attempt to use something rated at higher wattage or higher ohms?  If yes, how much higher could one safely go?  Or is that a mistake of biblical proportions?

Actually, going to higher wattage will most likely reduce the sound volume.  Given the tiny speaker, that's probably not desirable.  What you really want is a higher dB rating on the speaker for louder sound.

Going to a higher impedance is also a mistake, that will reduce the volume.
