Anyone who notices my posts knows I'm, at best, an oddball, when it comes to sound. That aside.

The LC Polar Express is, IMO, too loud and more than a tad tinny. I was going to replace the 8ohm, with a  16 ohm speaker. As folks here mentioned, that will lower the volume. My wife said "put some tape over the speaker." It's worked for any number ofannoying kids toys. Someone here may have also suggested it.

I took 2 squares of rough finish construction paper (the stuff kids draw on)  and put them between the speaker and the chassis. 1 sheet helped. 2 were better. The sound is decreased and it doesn't have that grating (to me) edge. I don't have recording, but if the sound grates on you, try it.

I bought the 10th anniversary PE set recently, to replace my set from last year (I sold it), and I always wished that there was a way to turn down the volume.

Not too much unlike how you can utilize the built in volume knobs on more premier engines.

I love that it's loud and had great sound for a starter engine, but sometimes it can be a bit much.

I'll see if I can experiment with some options as well and see how they work out.

The 10th PE set is real nice with added touches, but the sound system is less than what I might have expected for a near $400 dollar set. Be that as it may though, I think the sound system could use some improvements and since that sound comes from the tender and not the locomotive, that may have allot to do with why they sound the way they do.

Personally, I would have put a better sound system within the tender and allowed for more control over it via the Lion Chief Remote. This would facilitate greater enjoyment of the set overall.

In the final analysis though, the set is awesome no matter what. A true testament to Lionel to mostly get things right.
