Improving the Sunset 3rd Rail SD40 | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum

I bought 6 of the sunset SD40s, 2 SP, 1 Canadian Pacific, 1 Missouri Pacific, 1 Norfolk Western and an undecorated one.

They are good models but there are a few things that can be done to improve these. The first of them is the air tanks. These are 2 small and hidden away when they should be clearly visible like they are in these photos

You can barely see them

So here are the 3D printed replacements, this is the 4th iteration, the model air tanks are 6mm in diameter they should be 8mm, the length is correct. The block on the side is to space them the correct distance from the frames, they need painting and will be glued to the bottom of the frame.

Pipe work varies from loco to loco so you need to check each one.

I'm surprised to see not much detailing in the air/fuel tank area on the 3rd Rail SD40's

Here is my Legacy SD40 SF #5006 for comparison

Last night I found the time to fit the air tanks to the loco and add a bit of pipework

The pipework isn;t painted yet so you can see it clearly

The next thing is add some frames above the trucks.
