I'm in the middle of a PS 2 upgrade on a former PS 1 MTH Premier Cab Forward and I have a question.

The engine has an existing constant voltage board for the boiler lights and the MTH instructions say that "an inductor must be placed 'in-line' between the red power wire and the track power wire originally used to power the constant voltage board".

Can someone tell me what the inductor does and why it is necessary?

GGG - Thanks for the info.

RJR - The installation was surprisingly easy compared to some of my recent Lionel and K Line PS2 conversion projects because a lot of original components are re-used. The tether part was easy - the 10 pin locomotive receptacle exactly replaces the old 4 pin PS1 receptacle at the smokestack end and the new 4 ohm PS2 speaker directly replaces the old 8ohm PS1 speaker in the Vanderbilt tender. The tender is now a bit crowded though!

Everything went fairly well until the last step, when the sound file wouldn't load due to a suspected processor issue on the new PS2 board. It was frustrating to find this on a brand new, sealed PS2 unit that I had kept a specifically for this project but GGG is going to try to rescue the board.
