The Lionel green (8952/3) and tuscan (8970/1) AA PRR F3s from 1979 both had B units which could be purchased individually-the green variation actually had two different B units-one with a horn (8164) and one without a horn ( 8059). All 3 B units are listed as "hard to find" in various Greenberg books-in fact, Greenberg implies that Lionel dealers had to purchase many other cars/engines to be able to get the 8164 Bs. Can anyone verify this-was this true for all those B units-about how many of each were made??? Thanks in advance-turtle7

Lionel made the set with the 5 cars and the green AA units. They then added 2 cars (combo and coach as add on items) and a non horn b unit, then the horned, then many years later the diner. The diner is in an orange box and all the rest are white boxes. Shortly after the green units were on the street people complained, that that the Pennsy would not run a green set of engines for a passenger train. So Lionel offered the Tuscan set all at once.
So if the Green units came out first, then the Tuscan set, people did not buy the first green b let alone the second green b with horn. I have both sets and over the years the horned b has always brought a premium over the non horned, but the green and red have been priced about the same.
I have both sets and run them both as ABBA's as if you have one green ABBA you must have a red ABBA.
To the best of my knowledge, Lionel never released production numbers on any item during the MPC, or LTI eras.
Second shelf
I encountered no difficulty finding a Tuscan B unit but only tried once, on August 22, 1986.
What, me worry?
