info on MTH bipolar part

I had to remove the body on my bipolar and a brass/copper? strip fell out. It appears that the strip was once attached to a circuit board in the unit that does NOT contain the battery. There is another one that is attached to the board still. I cannot tell how this strip was ever attached the the circuit board. A sheet of cellophane is on top of the circuit board and the copper strip that is still attached lies over the cellophane. Engine still operates properly without the strip. Does copper anyone know what the purpose of the strip is or how it was attached initially?
