Hi all,

I recently inherited a Lionel 203 with tender and about 6 or 7 other cars.  When I put the locomotive on the track and give it power, it acts like it has a dead short.  The drive wheels seem to spin easily by hand.  Does anyone have any advice on what to look for before I tear it apart?  I've never worked on anything this old.  Everything else I have is post-war.

The tender is missing a connector to the locomotive.  Any ideas if I can get a replacement connector?

Thanks.

Dave

Chuck Sartor at "only three rail" in Denver is a great source of parts and a real gentleman to work with.  He helped me with parts and instructions in the restoration of a 203.  I had never done anything like it before.  It turned out great.  I modernized mine with new tender trucks and front and rear knuckle couplers.

It's the poor man's B6 with a spur motor, but still has the spoked wheels and linkage of the scale version. I think they're harder to find. I finally got mine a few years ago with the bell ringer tender and love it!

There was a guy who asked about the promised postwar version on Switcher Saturday awhile back and thought he may have had one. The photos he posted looked good to me. Whenever people say "it never happened", I think of the blue "Boy's Train".

Update:  After some much needed guidance and words of encouragement from MNCW, I removed the boiler and found a few wires that needed attention.

So now it will go in reverse, no problem.  Going forward requires much more throttle to get it to move.  What should I be looking for at this point?  Does it just need cleaned and lubricated or is there something else I should be searching for?

Thanks guys!  I appreciate the help!

Dave
