One of our staff here at the Hawaiian Railway Model Train Museum has a Williams powered Shark Nose locomotive "871" with a like locomotive unpowered "853". It runs fine, but we need to add a body mounted switch to lock it into Forward.

If you don't care about sounds, why not gut the existing electronics and install a hefty bridge rectifier? It will always run in the direction you have it wired. Something like a 5 amp is probably overkill, but is cheap and will last practically forever.

I don't consider my suggestion a "sledgehammer". Afterall, the first Williams units had no reverse units and were wired with bridge recifiers. I know: I had several. Besides, I'm a firm believer in KISS.
