Intermodal Crane Help

What would be nice is a mod to the crane to use metal gears and lower the gear ratio of the traverse mechanism and lifting mechanism.  That would make it run much smoother and would be a worthwhile fix.

Any idea if any type of glue would hold this small gear to the shaft?

On my list of "to do's" is to sort my intermodal crane. I have bought a small motor with inbuilt gearbox which I intend to replace the crappy gears with. When I get around to it I will show you the results.

I'm thinking of the metal gears that Frank Timko has available, that might be an attractive option.

 

Of course, if you change the gear ratio to a more realistic speed, that would really make the crane a more prototypical operating accessory.

It occurs to me that folks might like to have the exploded parts drawings and lists for the crane.

 

 

I had a similar situation with the MTH water tank. The small drive gear slips over the can motor shaft and drives a gearbox. The gear split and wouldn't turn with the motor shaft. I used some gap filling crazy glue to attach the gear to the motor shaft. So far it works fine.Obviously, replacement gears would be best, but do any of the Lionel parts places have them? Try S & W Parts in Niskayuna, NY. Ask for Bill and see if he can help you. I was referred to him by Lionel when I needed a drive belt for an American Flyer Coaling Tower.
