I want to share some good fortune I had with my 12741 UP Intermodal Crane. As you know this is the 1989 edition and I just experienced a gear failure which I recall it rather common with this accessory.Specifically the shaft with the small and large gears will have a failure where one or both gears break or in my case the small gear became detached from the shaft.

I know a gentleman who is the perfect person for repairing these cranes. He is a retired engineer from Fisher Price and he has scratch built boats, locomotives (live steam) and clocks! He makes his own gears and his rigging expertise (boats) makes the rigging on the crane mere child's play. He lives in Orchard Park NY and I can't post his personal info here but if you have a intermodal crane in need of help, let me know and I will act as a go between.

I had a similar situation with the MTH water tank. The small drive gear slips over the can motor shaft and drives a gearbox. The gear split and wouldn't turn with the motor shaft. I used some gap filling crazy glue to attach the gear to the motor shaft. So far it works fine.Obviously, replacement gears would be best, but do any of the Lionel parts places have them? Try S & W Parts in Niskayuna, NY. Ask for Bill and see if he can help you. I was referred to him by Lionel when I needed a drive belt for an American Flyer Coaling Tower. You can get their phone number from their website.
