Another possibly old question... Can other containers be used in the Lionel maxi stack well cars or just those? I just finished repairing a couple busted CN well cars but have no containers for them and would like a little more variety than the CN Laser or Lionel 4 pack offered. Thanks!
I also like intermodal rail cars. Although I won't have space for a large facility, I am dedicating a small industrial space for a few stacks to deal with the 12 cars that I have now. I plan on getting the Jaol stacker. Thanks for all the ideas.

Around the yards they get stacked 5 high so you can create quite an impressive display even in a small area with just a few cars. Remember the yards and ports tend to have more containers than cars. So I like your strategy of focusing on the containers.
As far as the sizing from the manufacturers is concerned I can't offer too much guidance. I have the MTH Premier, Atlas and the Lionel that come with the "scale" size cars.
Each one of them has something "off" about them in their measurements. One thing often discussed is that the MTH 20ft'ers are too wide to be truly scale, and thus they won't fit in the bottom of the Atlas Twin Stack/Bulkhead cars. The Atlas containers are neither regular cube, nor hi-cube but somewhere in between. The Lionels are too short, but the correct width and height.
That's what I figured. Thank you for your response everyone! I was lucky on eBay a few weeks ago. Someone was just selling random Railking boxes. So I purchased them to add to the layout. I think that's what I'm going to keep doing.
Paul,
Will do towards the middle of the week
